Aviation Safety and Security Systems

Each year the number of aviation crime across the country increases, causing a greater interest and concern for theft prevention and security protection. Statistics reported to the Aviation Crime Prevention Institute (ACPI) shows there over 320 aircraft and 7200 pieces of avionics equipment listed as either stolen or vandalized in the past decade. Theft of handheld devices such as headsets, portable GPS, tools or other valuable items and personal possessions. There is no way to determine the extent of these damages and this does not include the thousands of hangars or cockpit break-in cases not reported.

Since September 11 the GA faces a new pressure to prevent the threat of danger and potential terrorist attacks, not on just large commercial airplanes, but the for smaller private/corporate aircraft. Unfortunately it has been proven that aircraft can be used as a weapon causing damage, injury and death. Homeland security must now include aviation. There is a new need to keep aircraft safe from intruders who steal and use airplanes in suicide missions, or plant explosives that can cause tremendous damage to property and people. It does not just worry pilots and aircraft owners, but this involves the general public. Passengers are now demanding tighter and more reliable security from the aviation industry. Everyone is looking for answers and peace of mind.

Smaller local airports once considered safe now face new concerns and inquiries from aircraft owners asking about hangar security protection. Hangar management companies are starting to offer their customers ways to protect their hangars. Pilots must also find ways to prevent any crime or theft to their aircraft while tied down at other airports.

The subject of aviation security is a growing issue. There are many thoughts and ideas on how to be more prepared and how to protect ourselves with greater efficiency. You need to know what options are available. The best way to start is to become more educated. Ask questions, know what to look for, know what you need and know what you want in the form of protection.

  • Do you want just a simple local alarm with a high-powered siren that is not monitored?
  • Do you feel the need for 24-hour monitoring? How does it work? What is the cost?
  • Do you travel to other airports and leave your aircraft tied down for long periods of time?
  • Maybe you need a portable system to leave in the aircraft while you are away?
  • Do you want a system that does not use phone lines or need wires for installation?
  • Are you interested in a system with the option of using solar energy as back up power?
  • Do you want features like a voice-recorded warning that plays when the hangar door is opened?
  • Do you have a large or double size hangar that needs wide omni-directional motion detectors for better coverage?

The more informed you become on aviation security protection, the more prepared you will be in the event of crime or vandalism. Being protected will bring you peace of mind.
